To "They found partners, had sex, had babies, felt joy and sorrow, suffered the deaths of loved ones, and sometimes won small victories against the advance of time" I feel compelled to add "were raped." As a distinct possibility.

Sure. It's a possibility. But I don't know. I don't think it does any good to speculate. But I can see that the word "partners" is a not a good choice. I was thinking of people who might read this, people who might be descended from these women, and I wince at the thought of them reading the word "rape" in my piece.
