He seems to want to flirt with catastrophe. He's competitive in a way that seems almost puerile. And there is, as I say, a dark side to this story. These Englishmen hired impoverished locals as guides and porters, then carelessly put them in harm's way. In all this, of course, he is very contemporary. I may write another essay on this.
