Thanks, Doug. Great essay, and fun, yes, to see some of your qualities--the best and most independent ones--in these guys :). xo, Jody

Jody, Still very odd to think of myself as a Puritan. I am looking into retraining as an inspector of staves.

Thanks for a good laugh. And lovely to be reconnected with you. I retired from URI (Gender and Women's Studies) in June 2022 and from Spalding MFA low rez in 2020. Living in rural Exeter, RI, with Mike Yefko, an artist, now for 21 years! My kids are ancient (Jess 43 lives with husband Scott and Louise (11) and Althea (7) in Ventura CA--Jess is a history/humanities teacher--and Cricket 40 lives with husband Ben and son Tate (10) and daughter Faren (8) outside Boston, in Needham--Cricket is an internal medicine doctor at the Brigham and Women's Hospital.) Your kids must be ancient, too? But not us, we get younger by the day, right? I'm writing everyday and getting outdoors a lot--I LOVE retirement. And you?

Timely, dg - just as the double digit property tax increases are announced, one wonders whose hand is in whose pocket - love how you bring this to conclusion under the dark moon.

Thanks, Deirdre. It does, in many ways, sound like a contemporary story.

What a lovely picture of Charles and Ida, thanks for sharing these pictures and your family discoveries . Researching one's family tree is such great fun and it can be a real challenge especially when one's ancestors from the current generation back to Jacob & Francis Glover were military and never in one place for long. I hope this blog will continue even if you won't be a writer in future? Cheers, B Glover

Great article. We are related. I am the 12th generation of Pettits from Thomas Pettit through Jonathan down the line to the Grimsby Pettits and onward. Cheers!

I would swear I ran across the name Pettit in recent research about distant relatives who lived in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York State. Could we be distantly related? I wondered. Ha! But by the time I finished your blog I decided it was probably best if I didn't know!
